We have wondered for several years how a solo cello programme would be received as part of our Coffee Concert series. In the end we felt that a pairing in which the cello is an equal partner to the violin would be more widely appreciated.

Gemma Rosefield, who we know to be a wonderful cellist from her Coffee Concert appearance three years ago with guitarist Morgan Szymanski, suggested this unusual duo, with fellow Ensemble 360 member, violinist Benjamin Nabarro. Gemma’s intelligent performances are invariably well-reviewed, “…the solo part (in Elgar’s Cello Concerto) was intensely expressive yet never over-burdened with solemnity…her tone was beautiful…total command of this music”, whereas “purity of style, elegance of phrasing and unsurpassed perfection of technique…an outstanding artist”, is how one reviewer encapsulated Benjamin’s playing.

With Ferdinand the Bull making an appearance alongside some deeply-felt Bach and works by other mainstream composers, Ben and Gemma’s varied programme is sure to delight, move and thrill in equal measure.
