Rook Lane Film Nights – MUDDY RIVER (DORO NO KAWA)
Sunday 5th May
Film at dusk // Doors open an hour before
dir: Kôhei Oguri Japan 1981 105 mins
The children of a war widow living in a houseboat on the river of the title in Osaka in 1950 befriend the son of a local restaurant owner. The intense activity of the vast city, a centre for post-war reconstruction in Japan, contrasts with the children’s uncluttered lives; in front of the industrial skyline, the young friends stand in innocent defiance of the social circumstances which bear down upon them.
