Architecture Club presents….Destination Antarctica with Hugh Broughton
Tuesday 4th February
Doors at 7pm // Talk from 7:30pm
In 2005 Hugh Broughton’s small architectural practice won the RIBA competition to design the Halley VI Antarctic Research Station. The winning design was based on a series of hydraulically elevated ski-based modules which enable the station to move around as the ice beneath it cracks and moves. As well as resisting temperatures of -50C and winds of 100mph, the research station has a special central module with a dramatic open plan social area and observation deck from which to view the Southern Lights. Hugh will guide us through the design process, explain what makes this building so special and show us how he has gone on to design other projects in Antarctica and the Arctic for other countries.
About Architecture Club…
ARCHITECTURE CLUB, FROME is a collaborative project initiated by Pippa Goldfinger, NVB / Rook Lane and RIBA South West. The project will bring architects, architectural writers, engineers and planners to Frome in order to stimulate a wide-reaching debate – for both the public and professionals alike – on the politics, aesthetics and meaning of the built environment.
In 2013, Architecure Club welcomed FAT Architects, Liza Fior of muf architecture / art, and architectural writer and critic Owen Hatherly to Rook Lane. 2014’s programme is set to be just as exciting with visits from landscape designers, architects, writers and urban planners in the pipeline.
