Panther Panchali
Sunday 4th May
Films are screened at dusk // doors open an hour before
(dir. Satyajit Ray, India, 1940)
The first film directed by Satyajit Ray (and the first Indian film to attract attention in the west) shows us village life in rural west Bengal as experienced by an impoverished family. At its heart is Apu, making the transition from childhood to adulthood, and it is the world seen from Apu’s perspective which gives it its substance. Ravi Shankar’s music is a further enhancement.
