For Frome Festival 2015, Rook Lane hosts an exhibition of two halves, both of which examine the essential role that stories play on our everyday lives.
In the cafe space, Lucia Harley curates ‘Storywalking’: a magical exploration of Rook Lane Arts Trust’s current creative literacy work in schools led by artist-technologist Chris Jelley, and educator Claire Vowell.
Explore new work and walks by local children, seek out a GPS located story hidden around the grounds of Rook Lane Chapel, or come along to our Saturday workshop and help create a new geo-located Storywalk around the winding streets of Frome.
In the main chapel space, Rook Lane will be hosting an exhibition examining the longevity of the oral storytelling tradition as part of the human experience. Shape Shifting brings together elements of traditional folk storytelling with visual art, to highlight the possibility that a spoken, ephemeral, performance art can contain traditional knowledge and mythology that dates back to before the invention of writing.
Large-scale text pieces, devised by Frome Storyteller Lisa Kenwright, and curated by artist Lucia Harley, will echo traditional folklore of shape shifters in animal guise, and respond to a series of sculptural masks by Frome artist Gladys Paulus, whose work is inspired by the shamanic tradition of her family’s native Indonesia.
Shape Shifting & Story Walking will provide a dramatic backdrop to a week-long Frome Festival programme that celebrates words both spoken and sung. On Saturday 4th July, Chris Jelley annd Break 3 will be leading a special family event – A Story Walk in a Day – setting off from Rook Lane Chapel at 11am.
