In this story of a woman’s chance encounter with the man she believes shattered her life 15 years earlier, exiled Chilean writer Ariel Dorfman wanted to portray “the stark, painful Chilean transition to democracy” at the end of the eighties. It is a tense triangle of revenge and retribution that takes place in a single night and questions how trauma may be addressed and reconciliation may be found. In Polanski’s adaptation, featuring Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley, of the original stage play, the ethical dilemmas of the three protagonists are always in sharp focus.
