Spoils of War: Talk by Christopher Joll

An illustrated talk by Christopher Joll based on his recently published book. The author takes a robust and controversial view of the contemporary issues surrounding the repatriation of the nation’s acquisitions. Surprisingly local examples include Bath’s missing Crimean War cannons, Hitler’s last desk in Dorchester, Napoleon’s dispatch case in Wilton. The presenter of ‘Thinking Outside the Box about the S.S. Great Britain. Author of historical fiction including the Speedicut Saga. Director of many national military events and also a military historian.
Christopher Joll, was born in 1948 and educated at Oxford University and the RMA Sandhurst. He was commissioned into The Life Guards in 1968, leaving seven years later following service that included four tours of duty in Northern Ireland.
After a career in the City and industry, in 2005, Christopher’s focus turned to writing books and directing major events including the Household Cavalry Pageant, the Royal Hospital Chelsea Pageant, the Diamond Jubilee Parade in the Park, the British Military Tournament, the Gurkha Pageant, The Patron’s Lunch (advisory) and The Great War Symphony.
Christopher’s books include Uniquely British: A Year in the Life of the Household Cavalry, The Speedicut Papers and The Speedicut Memoirs, a series of 19th/20th century military-historical action adventure stories. In 2018 he completed The Drum Horse in the Fountain: tales of the heroes & rogues in the Guards which was published by Nine Elms Books. Christopher Joll lives in Bath.
