ARCHITECTURE CLUB presents Owen Hatherley : Why is British Architecture so Bad?
Tuesday 5th November
Doors at 7pm // Talk from 7:30pm
Owen Hatherley is an architecture critic “a commentator on architecture…in a school of one” (Jonathan Meades) – his books ‘Militant Modernism’ and ‘A guide to the New Ruins of Great Britain’ have injected politics back into the heart of architectural debate and in doing so have brought that debate to life.
Why is British Architecture so bad?
British architecture, with its internationally famous, frequently knighted protagonists, was considered for a time a great success story, especially in the 2000s. Yet the actual quality of most buildings in that era was often staggeringly poor. This talk will try to explore how this gulf between prestige architecture and a usually cheap and nasty standard emerged, finding a variety of culprits from PFI to the rhetoric of High-Tech.
About Architecture Club…
ARCHITECTURE CLUB, FROME is a collaborative project initiated by Pippa Goldfinger, NVB / Rook Lane and RIBA South West. The project will bring architects, architectural writers, engineers and planners to Frome in order to stimulate a wide-reaching debate – for both the public and professionals alike – on the politics, aesthetics and meaning of the built environment.
