Frome Society for Local Study presents….Mr Gladstone comes to Frome
Monday 7th July
Doors at 7pm // Talk from 7:30pm
In January 1877 the former and future Prime Minister, William Gladstone, paid a brief visit to Frome and addressed an open air meeting.
In the country at large this was a time of rising protest against Turkish massacres of Orthodox Christians in the Balkans. In September 1876 Gladstone had published the most famous of his pamphlets, ‘The Bulgarian Horrors and the Question of the East’. Gladstone became the leader of a popular front of moral outrage and it was in this role that he came to speak to the people of Frome.
The Frome Society for Local Study presents an evening recalling the background to Mr Gladstone’s visit, the people he met, what Frome was like then and what he did when he was here.
Admission
£6 from the Frome Festival Box Office - opening in May.
