Suggested by the 1930 classic, THE BLUE ANGEL, this atmospheric and satirical study of moral bankruptcy is played out on the sleazy side of the tracks in small-town post-war Germany. Fassbinder’s film is a garish and flamboyant cautionary tale with a wonderfully abandoned performance by Barbara Sukowa in the title role.
