Ingmar Bergman’s cinematic experiment, made early in his cinematic career, holds a mirror to the film-making process: following a visit from his old teacher, a film director is distracted by his mentor’s suggestion of an original and unconventional idea for a film. Stylish and surprising, the film addresses existentialist notions in a way that is both alluring and disturbing as it homes in on the experiences of its tragic heroine.
