Secret Underground Cities – Corsham During World War II
Monday 10th July
19:00 - 20:30
Frome Society for Local Study presents an illustrated talk by Nick McCamley. By the mid-1930’s the British Government was preparing for war. Disused stone quarries below the villages of Neston Gastard and Monkton Farleigh were converted for power stations, conveyor belts, narrow gauge and standard gauge railways. An aircraft engine factory, operations centre for the RAF, bomb proof safety vaults for London museums and art galleries’ treasures, and vault for bank notes were built. Nick explains his discoveries, the history and use of these secret places abandoned at the end of the cold war.
