The chance encounter on a train between a mother and her young son and a seductive soldier provides a worm’s-eye-view of real life in post-war Stalinist Russia; as the feelings of the two vulnerable travellers for the martial stranger veer from trust to suspicion and his behaviour towards them takes a sinister turn, a potent parable emerges.
